Gender and Justice

HEAL Africa’s Gender and Justice initiative tackles the root causes of gender inequality in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Through decades of war and centuries of exploitation, traditional, social and community structures have broken down. Most of today’s Congolese women are unaware of their rights. We actively promote these rights and educate communities about these rights. Learn more about how HEAL Africa tackles the root causes of gender inequality.

Heal My People

Survivors of rape or obstetric fistula in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) usually have serious medical problems. The majority of them are abandoned by their husbands and ostracized by their communities. The psychological trauma, isolation and shame, frequently accompanied by spiritual struggles, tend to overwhelm the survivor. Heal My People seeks to identify the survivors, connecting them to and assisting them with vital medical, psychological, and social recovery assistance. Learn more about how HEAL Africa helps to identify, connect and assist survivors.

Women’s Centers

Women’s Centers or “Wamama Simameni” (Women Stand Up Together), are landmarks on the road to healing for suffering women. Often called “safe houses”, these locations offer access to medical care, counseling, and training in a secure setting. These centers help facilitate discussions and learning about issues commonly faced by women in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Learn more about how HEAL Africa supports women communities.
