Healing the Wounds of Eastern DRC: Clinical Pastoral Training, a Path to Restoration

In Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, war, displacement, and violence have left deep scars. The wounds are not only physical, they also touch the soul and the spirit.

To reach out to these broken hearts, HEAL Africa has been implementing a unique program since 2013: Clinical Pastoral Training (CPT). This training equips pastors, chaplains, doctors, priests, community leaders, and psychologists to better listen, accompany, and support those who suffer.

When Training Becomes Healing

From August 5 to September 9, 2025, sixteen participants from Eastern DRC took part in the second CPT session of the year. Many arrived carrying their own hidden wounds. Through group therapy, hospital visits, and individual follow-ups, they discovered that healing begins with listening.

“I thought I was coming to help others, but I realized the training healed me too,” shared one participant.

“Before CPT, I often doubted my ministry. Today, I’ve found new meaning in my mission,” testified a pastor.

The CPT program is more than just training – it’s a journey of transformation, both for those who receive it and for those they accompany.

A Growing Community

Since 2013, the number of trained participants has continued to rise. In 2025 alone, 53 participants, including several HEAL Africa staff members, were equipped to support survivors of violence, war victims, displaced families, and hospital patients.

What makes CPT unique is its focus on invisible wounds, those that the eyes cannot see but the heart still carries.

The needs remain immense. With every new session, more men and women are prepared to bring hope and comfort. With the support of its partners, HEAL Africa remains committed to building a community of healers for Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
