Goma, Women’s Month: HEAL Africa Celebrates the Renewal of Women Standing Strong through Trials

On March 10, 2026, the grounds of the HEAL Africa Tabernacle in Goma came alive with a unique energy. Laughter, songs, vibrant colors, and warm embraces set the rhythm for a day dedicated to celebrating International Women’s Day. Organized by HEAL Africa in collaboration with its partners, the event paid heartfelt tribute to the women respectfully known as the Women of Valor.

In a region shaped by decades of conflict, particularly in Goma, many women continue to carry the weight of profound loss and repeated hardship. And yet, they move forward. This gathering was far more than a celebration; it created a space of recognition, where their courage and determination to rebuild their lives were honored with sincerity.

Lives transformed through learning and solidarity

At HEAL Africa, the Women of Valor come together every Tuesday and Friday, building a strong network of mutual support through Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs). In these groups, they save, learn, pray, and uplift one another, even as their livelihoods remain vulnerable to ongoing crises.

One of the most powerful moments of the day was the sharing of personal testimonies, stories filled with emotion, dignity, and pride. Several women spoke about how HEAL Africa’s literacy programs have reshaped their daily lives, opening the door to reading and writing for the first time.

Sakina, speaking with quiet confidence, shared: “I was illiterate, and it made me deeply unhappy, especially because my husband had the opportunity to go to school. I lacked confidence even to speak when given the chance. Today, through these trainings, I can read, write, and express myself with confidence.”

Beside her, Mukereja, a 65-year-old mother of fifteen from Idjwi, spoke with heartfelt gratitude: “HEAL Africa became a place of renewal for me. At my age, I have learned how to read and write.” Her story stands as a powerful reminder that it is never too late to learn, to grow, and to begin again.

A celebration rooted in sharing

The day was also marked by meaningful acts of solidarity. With the support of HEAL Africa’s partners, participants received matching fabrics, and a shared meal brought everyone together in a warm, communal atmosphere. A message from one of the partners deeply resonated with those present: “I am happy to see you all gathered here today. May God give you strength and heal your wounds. You are strong, and you are loved.”

The gathering at HEAL Africa, in Goma, offered a living example of unity and collaboration in action. Beyond the celebration, it strengthened connections and opened new possibilities for the women involved. On this occasion, HEAL Africa also recognized the commitment of its partners, whose concrete support continues to restore dignity and create lasting change in the lives of women.

Because, ultimately, the Women of Valor are not defined by the hardships they have endured, but by their unwavering ability to rise again, to believe again, and to move forward with strength, faith, and determination.
