Goma School Fund: A Back-to-School Celebration in Style

In Mugunga, a displacement site on the outskirts of Goma, the new school year did not begin in fear or fatigue, but in joy, songs, and renewed hope.

For many children at the Goma School Fund primary school in Mugunga (GSF Mugunga), life has not been easy. Displaced by the conflicts that continue to affect eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, they have experienced loss, uncertainty, and exile. Yet, at the heart of these challenges, one truth remains unshakable: every child has the right to learn, to dream, and to grow in safety and joy.

A day of celebration and smiles

On October 3, the school’s dusty courtyard turned into a place of laughter and festivity. The event, called “Back to School in Style,” was designed to celebrate childhood and restore courage to these young learners.

The festivities began with a birthday celebration for all children whose birthdays had taken place in recent months. Wearing colorful hats, they stood proudly as their classmates sang a cheerful Happy Birthday. For some, it was the very first time they had ever celebrated their birthday.

Afterward, cakes and sweets were shared, filling the air with excitement and laughter. “This is the first time I’ve ever celebrated my birthday,” said one student shyly, a wide smile lighting up her face.

Back in class, another surprise awaited them: each student received a brand-new backpack filled with notebooks, pens, and other school supplies.

“I’m so happy to have received my new bag!” exclaimed Carine, 11. “My old one was torn, but now I have a new backpack, with notebooks and pens!”

The headmaster of GSF Mugunga Primary School shared his emotion: “When I saw all these children smiling as they received their new bags, I felt so proud. This kind of joy is rare here, but it gives us the strength to keep going.”

A shared meal, a symbol of hope

The day ended with a communal meal – simple, yet precious for many students who sometimes struggle to find food at home. That day, there was enough for everyone, and even a little to take home.

Thanks to the collaboration between HEAL Africa and its generous partners, moments of happiness like these are becoming possible at GSF Mugunga School. Beyond education, these initiatives restore dignity, nurture joy, and rekindle the flame of a brighter future.

Each backpack, each shared meal, and each smile tells the same story: the story of what happens when compassion turns into action.

HEAL Africa is not only helping children return to school. Through its commitment, the organization is helping them believe once again in a fulfilled and hopeful future.
