Christmas in Goma: Over 1,300 Children Gathered for a Generous Celebration at HEAL Africa

The year 2025 has not been an easy one for many children in Goma. Families have faced economic and social challenges and for some, even basic needs became difficult to meet. In response, HEAL Africa and its partners intentionally focused its end of year outreach on affirming the value, dignity, and joy of children as they prepared to celebrate Christmas.
On the 21st of December, a shoe distribution initiative was carried out for Sunday School children at HEAL Africa. The initiative was born out of the recognition that many children had endured a difficult year and that a simple yet meaningful gift could communicate care, inclusion, and hope. All children who attended Sunday School that day received a pair of shoes, ensuring that no child was left out. In total, 1,370 children benefited from the distribution.
The impact of this act of giving was clearly visible. The joy and excitement on the children’s faces spoke volumes. As Kika, one of the children’s teachers said, “This has been a great time for us, especially seeing the smiles it brought on the children’s faces.”
The timing of the distribution made it especially meaningful during the Christmas season, a time of generosity and reflection on God giving His one and only Son. The outreach embodied this spirit in a practical and compassionate way.
The celebration continued on the 25th of December with a vibrant children’s Christmas program held at the HEAL Africa tabernacle. From the moment they arrived, each child was welcomed with paper hats and stickers, immediately setting a joyful and festive atmosphere. The chapel soon filled with excitement as more than a thousand children gathered to celebrate together.

What made the celebration particularly special was the active participation of the children themselves. Children led the entire program including: praise and worship, dancing, skits about the birth of Jesus, and the sharing of the Word of God. This intentional involvement empowered them, nurtured confidence, and allowed them to experience Christmas not only as participants, but as contributors.
Dedicated Sunday School monitors were present throughout the event to ensure the children were well cared for, creating a safe and joyful environment. Reflecting on the day, Chaplain Damiri Paluku noted, “Something unique about this Christmas is that we were able to gather all these children even in the midst of chaos. It was filled with joy and the peace of Jesus Christ.” This reflection captured the deeper spiritual impact of the celebration beyond the visible festivities.
The success of the Christmas celebration was the result of intentional preparation and collective effort. The entire month leading up to Christmas was dedicated to prayer, planning and teamwork. Volunteers, leaders, and staff worked closely together to ensure that every detail was handled with care. Many thanks to HEAL Africa and its partners who combined their efforts to give the children a truly memorable Christmas experience.
Practical needs were addressed while emotional, spiritual, and communal well-being were nurtured. We give thanks for the unity, dedication, and partnership that made it possible to create moments of joy, peace, and hope for so many children in 2025. Together we can do better in the new year.
