Healing Beyond Shelter: Preparing Beloved Children for Life After Crisis
In the aftermath of the devastating conflict that struck Goma in late January, HEAL Africa took urgent action to protect some of the most vulnerable children who had been living on the streets, exposed to danger and trauma. In an earlier report, we shared the immediate steps we took to offer these beloved children shelter, care, and safety.
Today, we step into a new and hopeful phase: reintegration.
The children who found refuge with us are now beginning the journey back into family life and their broader communities. But our goal is not just to take them home and leave them there. We are deeply committed to making sure that these children are ready to thrive, not just survive within their homes and neighbourhoods.
That’s why we’ve launched a focused reintegration program centered on the theme: “How to Live in the Family and Community.” This series is more than just a set of lessons but a roadmap for healing, belonging, and positive reinvention. Under the guidance of dedicated teachers and counselors each child is learning how to build relationships, communicate with respect, manage emotions, and contribute meaningfully to those around them. This will enable them to transition from a sheltered environment back into their communities.
Our monitors, young men and women, trained by HEAL Africa are the heart of this effort. Day in and day out, they teach, mentor, listen, and encourage. Their work ensures that every child is not only equipped with practical skills but is also emotionally supported.
Reintegration is not an event. It is a process and we are committed to walking that journey with each child. We know that returning home does not automatically mean everything is fine. That’s why our work continues even after reunification to ensure families are prepared, children are supported, and families can receive ongoing support.
This is a massive undertaking and one that requires continued resources. We are calling on partners, donors, and supporters to help us ensure that this next chapter for Goma’s children is one of healing, hope, and lasting change.
Together, we are not only responding to crisis. We are rebuilding lives.
