Urgent Update: Escalating Conflict in Goma
The situation in and around Goma has drastically deteriorated since Thursday, January 23, 2024, following surprise attacks by M23 rebels. The attacks, which occurred in Sake (30 km west of Goma) and Kibumba (20 km north of Goma), have led to widespread panic and desolation across the city. Bombs launched by the rebels have caused human casualties, with injured individuals being treated at HEAL Africa Hospital.
HEAL Africa’s Response
In the face of this crisis, HEAL Africa has activated its contingency plan to provide emergency medical care. Yesterday evening, we admitted our first patient, who required an urgent laparotomy, and our dedicated medical team continues to remain on high alert. Despite the escalating violence and uncertainty, our hospital operations are ongoing.
The influx of displaced people into Goma has nearly doubled the city’s population. Vulnerable groups, including women and children, are now seeking refuge in the city, many without shelter, basic necessities, or access to clean water. This puts Goma at heightened risk of outbreaks such as cholera. HEAL Africa is doing everything possible to care for those in need, but our resources are stretched thin.
Critical Challenges
- Electricity: Both power lines supplying the city and our hospital have been damaged, leaving us reliant on generators. Fuel shortages in Goma may soon limit our capacity to sustain essential hospital services.
- Water: Many areas in the city lack running water. Our hospital’s water tanks are currently filled, but supplies will only last for a few days.
- Communication: Internet access was interrupted for nearly 24 hours and remains unstable, impacting coordination efforts.
- Project Activities: With the current insecurity, project activities are significantly disrupted. An assessment is planned for early next week to determine the status of ongoing initiatives and report to funding partners.
