This is Marguerite. She has been sick for 25 years This is Marguerite. She has been sick for 25 years. Dr. Justin fixed her fistula last month. Dr. Justin was one of HEAL Africa’s first Residents of Family Medicine. He has helped over 3,500 women regain their dignity since he specialized in fistula repairs after completing a Family Medicine residency.

This is the kind of difference you can make when you invest in training our doctors. $300 can help fund a doctor’s expenses for one month. Your gift will be #thegiftthatkeepsongiving

Today is #GivingTuesday, marking the start of the Today is #GivingTuesday, marking the start of the holiday giving season and a global movement to make a difference through charitable giving. We know you care about our work in #DRC.

When a crisis happens, the poorest members of a community, specifically women, and children suffer the most. This is especially true in Congo, which has had a crumbling healthcare system for decades. But we’re trying to change this story by training local doctors to go back into the community and rebuild it through health.

This season, we’re raising funds to ensure training for Residents in Family Medicine. Make a difference with us!

Make a one-time donation or a recurring donation through our website in the profile link, and make sure to designate it for “family medicine” under instructions.
COVID-19 cases in DRC have reached almost 10,000. COVID-19 cases in DRC have reached almost 10,000. As an organization whose purpose is to serve the community and heal bodies (the opposite of social distancing), a lot of things have slowed down for us with social distancing. But we are doing the same work. It just looks a little different and we are doing the best we can. We hope you are managing too!
Perhaps the easiest part about treating fistula is Perhaps the easiest part about treating fistula isn’t the surgery itself, but the layers of obstacles before a woman receives life changing surgery—assuming that the surgeon operating already holds a level of expertise. Here are 10 to give you some idea:
1. access to a healthcare clinic for prenatal care
2. cost of prenatal care and delivery
3. lack of trained healthcare professionals
4. living within a community connected enough to hear about a surgery campaign
5. cultural (mis)conceptions of western medicine
6. lack of infrastructure for travel
7. cost of travel
8. perceptions of gender (and inequality)
9. a woman’s feeling of hopelessness and shame
10. cost of surgery (approx. $500)
Many will show up for the surgery campaign simply to watch others go first, due to their misconceptions about anesthesia. Some will return, others will not. With the support of our partners, we are able to tackle many of these barriers in our public health efforts and surgery recruiting campaigns. Fistula is a condition of the poor that is not discussed enough in the poverty dialogue.

Thing’s aren’t perfect here. And we know many Thing’s aren’t perfect here. And we know many of you are struggling. We hope that you find some encouragement in Him who calmed a storm and rose from the dead.
This is a time of uncertainty for all of us. The g This is a time of uncertainty for all of us. The government has taken restrictive measures by closing the borders, but local hospitals are ill-prepared to deal with the pandemic. Many hospitals will not be able to take COVID-19 patients. HEAL Africa's role and impact in community health is significant in the region. As such we are taking precautions and trying to make the best decisions possible for our team and for those we serve. 👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾 https://mailchi.mp/healafrica/in-times-of-coronavirus-from-heal-africa
First there was Ebola and COVID-19 is no joke eith First there was Ebola and COVID-19 is no joke either. Life is fragile, so let’s remember to care of each and be thankful for the basics. The kids at Tuungane School inside the hospital are thanking God for their body parts and telling us why each is important. A good reminder.
